PDF Background Changer

Adobe Reader's "Replace Document Colors" setting is a viewer preference, not a file change. You see the cream or dark background you set. Everyone else still sees the original white. Send that PDF to a client, a student, or a colleague and it looks exactly the same as it always did on their screen.

Permanently changing a PDF background requires writing a new color layer directly into the file structure. How It Works

1. Upload your PDF — Drag and drop or click to select the file. The document loads in your browser and a live preview panel renders the current page. All processing happens locally via browser APIs. The file does not transfer to any external server at any point.
2. Configure your background — Choose from three background types. Solid Color lets you pick any hex color and set opacity from 0 to 100%. Gradient lets you set a start and end color with six direction options (left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top, diagonal in both orientations) and full opacity control. Background Image lets you upload a PNG, JPG, or WebP file and choose between Stretch, Cover, Contain, or Tile scale modes, also with opacity control. Then select which pages to apply the background to: All Pages, Odd Pages, Even Pages, Current Page Only, or a custom page range.
3. Save and download — Click Save PDF with New Background. The tool injects the background as a new layer behind all existing page content. Text, images, and layout elements remain on top and fully visible. Download the modified PDF and the background is permanently embedded in the file for every viewer and every device.

Unsupported Formats

Only PDF files can receive background changes through this tool. Word documents, PowerPoint files, and image files must be converted to PDF first. For background images, only PNG, JPG, and WebP are accepted; GIF and SVG files are not supported as background sources.

File Size Limits

All processing runs in-browser with no server upload, so there is no imposed file size cap. Adding a background image to a large multi-page PDF at full scale may increase the output file size noticeably, particularly if the background image itself is high resolution. Set opacity below 100% and use WebP for the background image source to keep output size manageable.
