💡 About ODT: ODT (OpenDocument Text) is the open standard format used by LibreOffice Writer, OpenOffice, Google Docs, and Microsoft Word (with plugin). PDF text is extracted and structured into paragraphs with heading detection. Best results with digital (selectable text) PDFs.

🔒 100% Private: Your PDF is converted entirely in your browser using PDF.js and JSZip. Nothing is uploaded to any server. ODT is a ZIP archive containing XML files — built entirely client-side. Open the .odt file in LibreOffice Writer or Google Docs.

If you use LibreOffice and have a PDF you need to actually edit, you already know the frustration. Opening the PDF in LibreOffice drops it into Draw mode, where the text shatters into dozens of overlapping text boxes instead of a clean, flowing Writer document. Getting something properly editable means finding a converter. Most of them upload your file to a third-party server. This tool runs the entire process in your browser, using PDF.js to extract text and JSZip to build the ODT file client-side. No upload. Your file does not leave your device.

How It Works

  1. Upload your PDF: Click or drag the file into the drop zone. PDF.js loads it directly into your browser session. Nothing is transmitted to a server at any point.
  2. Configure your ODT settings: Enable or disable automatic heading detection (font size analysis identifies likely headings and applies proper ODT heading styles), choose a font family from five options, set font size, page margins, page size (A4, Letter, or A5), line spacing, a document title, and select a page range if you only need specific pages converted.
  3. Convert and download: PDF.js extracts the text content page by page, the tool structures it into paragraphs and heading elements, writes the content.xml and styles.xml files required by the OpenDocument specification, packages everything into a ZIP archive with a .odt extension using JSZip, and delivers it for download. Open it directly in LibreOffice Writer or Google Docs.

Compatibility and Support

Supported Input and Output Formats

  • Input: Digital (text-selectable) PDF files, single-page and multi-page
  • Output: ODT (OpenDocument Text, ISO/IEC 26300); opens natively in LibreOffice Writer, Apache OpenOffice, Google Docs, and Microsoft Word 2007 or later
  • Heading styles: Auto-detected from font size differences or disabled for plain paragraph output
  • Font choices: Liberation Serif, Times New Roman, Arial, Liberation Sans, Calibri

Unsupported Formats

  • Scanned PDFs (image-only pages): There is no underlying text to extract. Run OCR on the scanned document first to generate a text-layer PDF, then convert. Without that step, the output will be empty paragraphs.
  • Password-protected PDFs: Encryption blocks text extraction entirely. Use the Unlock PDF tool first.
  • Non-PDF inputs: DOCX, PPTX, and other formats need to be in PDF format before this converter can process them.

File Size Limits

There is no server-side file size cap because all processing runs in your browser. Text-heavy PDFs of any length convert quickly. Very large PDFs with substantial embedded image content may run slower on low-RAM devices; closing other browser tabs before converting helps noticeably on those machines.

Who Should Use This Tool?

  • Students: A postgraduate student receiving a PDF essay template from their supervisor that needs sections filled and formatting adjusted. Converting to ODT means editing it in LibreOffice Writer without buying a Word license for a one-time task.
  • Freelancers: A technical translator who works in LibreOffice and receives source documents as PDF from agency clients. A clean, paragraph-structured ODT gives them a proper working file rather than a text box maze in Draw mode.
  • Office Professionals: Teams running LibreOffice across their organization (common in European public sector bodies and nonprofits) that receive contracts and reports from external partners as PDF. ODT conversion avoids any dependency on proprietary software for editing.
  • Developers: A developer maintaining a browser-based document processing pipeline who needs privacy-safe PDF text extraction producing structured ODT output, with no server infrastructure required for handling sensitive files.

Key Features

Here's what separates this tool from generic alternatives:

📝

LibreOffice Native Output

ODT is the format LibreOffice Writer was built around. No import dialogs, no compatibility warnings — just open the file and start editing.

🏷️

Automatic Heading Detection

Font size analysis in the source PDF identifies likely headings and maps them to proper ODT Heading 1, 2, and 3 styles, preserving document structure automatically.

🖋️

Font and Layout Control

Choose from five fonts, three page sizes, three margin widths, and three line spacing options before conversion. The output matches your working document standards from the start.

🔒

100% Private, Zero Upload

PDF.js handles text extraction and JSZip builds the ODT archive entirely in your browser. Confidential documents, legal files, and client work never leave your device.

📐

ISO Standard ODT Output

Output follows the ISO/IEC 26300 OpenDocument Text specification, ensuring the file works correctly across LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Google Docs, and Word 2007 and later.

Text Preview Before Download

A built-in preview shows the extracted text before you commit to downloading the ODT file. Check whether the extraction looks clean before saving it.

Why This Tool Beats the Alternatives

  • No account required; no email signup, no free credit system, no daily conversion limits
  • No watermarks added anywhere in the output ODT file
  • No server upload; most competing converters send your documents to remote servers even on free tiers
  • Heading detection and font/margin controls built in, not just a raw text dump with no structure
  • Immediate browser-side processing; no queue waiting behind other users on shared infrastructure
  • Custom page range selection for targeted conversion rather than forcing full-document output every time

Pro Tips

  • Before uploading, open your PDF and try selecting a sentence with your cursor. If you can highlight individual words, the PDF contains real selectable text and will convert cleanly. If text selection is impossible, it is a scanned image and the output will be blank. Run OCR on it first.
  • Use the custom page range setting for long reports or technical documents where you only need a specific section. Converting pages 4 to 12 of a 60-page PDF produces a cleaner, more manageable ODT than converting the whole document and deleting what you do not need.
  • After opening the converted ODT in LibreOffice Writer, run Format > Paragraph Styles to verify heading hierarchy. Automatic detection is accurate for most well-structured PDFs, but manually adjusting Heading 1 and 2 styles takes under two minutes and significantly improves navigation in longer documents.

Drop your PDF in, choose your fonts and page settings, and get a properly structured ODT file ready for LibreOffice Writer in seconds. If you need DOCX output for Microsoft Word compatibility instead, the PDF to Word converter runs the same extraction with DOCX output, or go the other direction with the Word to PDF converter when the editing is done.
