PNG to WebP

Convert PNG images to WebP while keeping transparent backgrounds β€” smaller files for faster websites.

Runs in your browser. Files and text you add here are processed on your own device with JavaScript and are not uploaded to our server. Some tools download a free open-source library (for example PDF.js or QPDF) from a public CDN the first time you use them. Very large files depend on your device's memory.

PNG is the go-to format for logos, UI screenshots and graphics with transparency β€” and it is often the heaviest thing on a web page. WebP supports transparency too, and a PNG with an alpha channel commonly shrinks by half or more when converted.

This tool converts PNG files to WebP directly in your browser and keeps the transparent areas transparent. You choose the quality level, so crisp icons and soft photographic PNGs both get sensible settings.

Typical wins: a 900 KB transparent product cut-out drops to roughly 150–250 KB, and a folder of UI screenshots loses more than half its weight. Designers exporting from Figma, Canva or Photoshop often get PNG by default, so this is the quickest way to make those exports web-friendly without re-exporting everything.

The output is lossy WebP with a lossless alpha channel, which is the combination most sites use for photos and illustrations with cut-out edges.

How It Works

  1. Choose PNG files β€” up to 50 per batch, including 32-bit PNGs with alpha transparency.
  2. Decode with alpha intact β€” each PNG is drawn onto a transparent canvas, so its alpha channel is preserved pixel for pixel.
  3. Encode to WebP β€” the browser's WebP encoder writes lossy WebP with alpha at the quality you set (85% by default). Download singly or as a ZIP.

Compatibility & Support

Supported Input β†’ Output Formats

  • Input: .png β€” screenshots, logos, icons, illustrations, transparent cut-outs
  • Output: .webp with alpha channel, quality 40–100%
  • Transparency: kept (WebP supports alpha, unlike JPG)

Unsupported Formats

Animated PNGs (APNG) become a single frame. If your Safari version can't create WebP files, the tool will say so. If you need maximum compatibility with email or print, convert to JPG with PNG to JPG instead.

WebP is also a poor fit where the file leaves the browser world: Microsoft Office before 2019, many print shops, older CMS image fields and some email clients still reject it. For those destinations keep the PNG, or send a JPG copy.

File Size Limits

Up to 50 images per batch and 60 MB per image. The real ceiling is your device's memory: a browser canvas tops out around 50 megapixels, so a 12,000 Γ— 9,000 px panorama may fail on a phone even though it works on a laptop.

Who Should Use This Tool?

  • Students: A student building a web development assignment converts icon PNGs to WebP and explains the size savings in their report.
  • Freelancers & Designers: A UI designer handing assets to developers exports PNGs from Figma, converts them to WebP here and ships a folder that is less than half the size.
  • Office Professionals: A content editor updating a company blog converts transparent product cut-outs to WebP so the CMS image library stays lean.
  • Developers: A developer optimizing a React app's static assets batch-converts sprites and illustrations, keeping transparency for dark-mode backgrounds.

Why This Tool Beats the Alternatives

  • Transparency is preserved instead of being flattened onto a background.
  • No uploads, so unreleased designs and client work stay private.
  • Free batch processing with no sign-up or daily limits.
  • Quality is under your control instead of hidden behind a single preset.
  • Nothing is watermarked or re-branded.

Pro Tips

  • For icons and text-heavy UI graphics, stay at 90% or higher so edges remain crisp.
  • Keep the PNG masters in your design repo and deploy the WebP versions; re-exporting from the master avoids stacking two rounds of lossy compression. Tiny PNGs of a few KB gain little, so focus on files above 50 KB.
  • Check transparent edges on both a light and a dark background after converting β€” soft shadows and anti-aliased outlines are where low quality settings show first.

Drop your PNG files above and get transparent WebP versions ready for the web.
