🔒 100% Private: Everything happens in your browser. No data is uploaded to any server. Drawings are embedded directly into the PDF as vector paths.

A teacher receives 30 student essay PDFs and needs to circle grammar errors, draw arrows to mark structural issues, and write correction symbols in the margins. Adobe Acrobat Reader has a drawing tool, but saving the annotated file without a Pro subscription either strips the annotations or locks the user in a loop. A UX designer reviewing a wireframe PDF from a contractor needs to sketch revision suggestions directly on the page. Most free online tools either watermark the output or upload the entire document to a remote server.

Freehand drawing directly on a PDF, saved cleanly, without uploading to anything, is the specific problem this tool solves. Pen and pencil tools, custom color, adjustable size, page-level clear, and a full undo stack. Drawings are embedded into the PDF as vector paths, not rasterized image layers, which keeps them sharp at any zoom level. The file is processed entirely in your browser.

How It Works

  1. Upload your PDF by dragging it onto the upload area or clicking to browse. The document renders page by page in the drawing canvas. Use the Prev and Next controls to navigate between pages. The canvas is ready to draw on immediately after the file loads.
  2. Draw on the page using the Pen tool for smooth, fluid strokes or the Pencil tool for a lighter, sketchier line texture. Set your color using the custom color picker (default is purple at #7c3aed, but any hex color is selectable). Adjust the brush size from fine to thick using the size control. Click and drag anywhere on the page to draw. Use the Eraser to remove specific areas. Undo reverts the last stroke. Clear Page wipes all drawings from the current page without affecting other pages. Navigate to additional pages and draw on each one independently.
  3. Save and download by clicking Save PDF with Drawings. PDF-Lib writes all drawn strokes as vector path objects embedded directly into the PDF page content layer. The output PDF downloads immediately, with all drawings visible in any standard PDF viewer and fully intact when printed at any scale.

Compatibility & Support

Supported Input and Output

  • Input: Any standard PDF (text-based, scanned, image-based, or form-based)
  • Output: PDF with freehand drawings embedded as vector paths in the page content layer
  • Drawing tools: Pen (smooth lines), Pencil (sketchy texture), Eraser
  • Color: Full custom hex color picker
  • Size: Adjustable brush/pen size
  • Per-page controls: Undo, Clear Page, Prev/Next navigation

Unsupported Features

Shape tools (rectangles, circles, arrows) are not currently available; the tool provides freehand drawing only. Text annotation is handled by the Add Text Box to PDF tool instead. Password-protected PDFs that restrict editing cannot be drawn on until the restriction is removed. Complex interactive PDFs with JavaScript overlays may render the canvas layer differently depending on the browser.

File Size Limits

All processing runs in-browser with no server upload, so no external file size cap applies. Because drawings are stored as vector paths rather than image data, the file size increase from drawing is minimal regardless of how much markup is added. Very large source PDFs may take a moment to load into the canvas, but process fully on modern browsers.

Who Should Use This Tool?

  • Students: A student peer-reviewing a classmate's essay PDF can circle unclear sentences, draw underline marks for strong passages, and sketch question marks in the margin, then send the marked-up file back as a single PDF without needing any annotation software installed.
  • Freelancers & Designers: A UX designer reviewing a client-supplied wireframe PDF can sketch proposed layout adjustments, draw flow arrows between screen elements, and mark interaction notes directly on the pages before sending revision feedback.
  • Office Professionals: A manager reviewing a proposal PDF can draw red circles around figures that need correction, sketch alternative layout ideas in blank margins, and return the annotated PDF to the author without emailing a separate document of written notes.
  • Developers: A developer reviewing a technical spec PDF can mark up diagrams with freehand annotations to indicate API boundary changes, workflow corrections, or data flow revisions, keeping all feedback visually attached to the relevant diagram on each page.

Key Features

Here's what separates this tool from generic alternatives:

🔒

No Server Upload

Your PDF and all drawings are processed entirely in the browser. Confidential documents, student work, legal drafts, and proprietary designs never transfer to any external server at any point.

📐

Vector Path Embedding

Drawings are saved as vector paths in the PDF content layer, not rasterized as image overlays. This keeps lines sharp at any zoom level and produces a smaller file size increase compared to image-based drawing tools.

✏️

Pen and Pencil Tools

The Pen produces smooth, consistent lines suited to arrows and clean markup. The Pencil produces a lighter, sketchy texture useful for draft-quality notes and informal markup that visually reads as tentative rather than final.

🎨

Custom Color and Size

Full hex color picker lets you choose any color. Different colors per reviewer or annotation type, combined with adjustable brush size, makes it easy to build a consistent and readable markup system across a multi-page document.

↩️

Per-Stroke Undo

Undo removes the last stroke without clearing everything on the page. Paired with the Clear Page option, you have full control over corrections at both the individual stroke level and the full page level before saving.

🖱️

Works with Mouse, Trackpad, and Touchscreen

Draw with a mouse or trackpad on desktop, or use a finger or stylus directly on a tablet touchscreen. The canvas captures input from all three input types without needing any additional configuration.

Why This Tool Beats the Alternatives

  • No account, email, or signup required at any point.
  • No watermarks added to the output PDF, a common restriction on free-tier annotation tools.
  • No server upload; confidential documents stay in the browser throughout the entire drawing session.
  • Vector path embedding rather than rasterization keeps drawings sharp at any zoom and print resolution.
  • Clear Page and per-stroke Undo give full correction control before saving, which basic canvas-overlay tools often do not offer.
  • No per-day limit or paid tier required to draw on and save any PDF.

Pro Tips

  • For review workflows with multiple annotators, assign a different color to each reviewer before they start drawing. Red for corrections, blue for questions, green for approvals. When the PDF is returned with all markup visible, each reviewer's input is immediately distinguishable without any legend or key needed.
  • On a tablet with a stylus, zoom into the page first before drawing on small areas like margin spaces or fine diagram details. The canvas captures input at the zoomed scale, so your drawn lines will appear at the correct precision on the actual page when saved rather than as large, approximate strokes.
  • After completing all markup, if the drawn annotations need to be permanently locked into the page so they cannot be accidentally moved or removed by a recipient, run the output through the Flatten PDF tool. This merges the vector paths into the static page content so the drawings behave like part of the original document in all PDF viewers.

Upload your PDF, pick your color, and start marking up pages immediately. If you also need to add typed text boxes alongside your freehand drawings, the Add Text Box to PDF tool handles typed annotations in the same browser-based workflow.
